A brilliant sy nth. It is an improved JX-3P. It has better MIDI and it has Velocity, a huge difference in the responsiveness of the synth. It can run the programmer (PG200) and MIDI at the same time unlike the JX-3P. It has a cartridge slot for patch storage which gives you 128 patches. Also, the sound is unique and unlike any other synth. There is Cross Modulation for metallic sounds and weirdness but it still does all those classic analogue basses and lead sounds. It excels in effects though. The Chorus is classic Roland and with 2 oscillators is much more flexible than a Juno.
The Roland MKS-30 / Planet-S is a JP-3X in a rack with Enhanced Midi and Cartridge capabilities.
Roland MKS-30 / Planet-S Features: 2 syncable DCO's with cross modulation for each of 6 voices. Velocity sensitivity for amp & filter cutoff. Highpass & Lowpass VCF, LFO (sine, square & noise) & 1 ADSR envelope per voice 64 patch memory with additional Roland M-16C cartridge slot (64 patches per cart). 6 voice - 12 Oscilators Back panel features Mono/Stereo out and MIDI Unlike the JX3P the MKS30 can be played over MIDI while tweaking sounds using a PG200 programmer. Basically, it's a 2 oscillator Analog polysynth, each Oscilator has choice of Square, Saw and Pulse wave / Oscillator 2 also offers Noise, Tune & Fine-Tune.
Each Oscilator can be switched to Freq' Modulation with choice of LFO or Envelope, and there is also a Cross-Mod' option with Sync or 'Metal' which is Ring modulation. The MKS Envelope Mod' choices are Inverted or Normal envelope mode, and the LFO offers Sine Square or Random waves, Delay-time & Rate on to the Filter section. This has Source mix, a High-Pass filter control, with Cut-off & Frequency, as well as Depth setting controls for Envelope Modulation & LFO Mod' again, the envelope here can be inverted. Finally the VCA has a Level Control as well as a Mode switch, selectable between Envelope, where it is assigned to the 4 stage Envelope control section, or Gate mode. There is also a Pitch Follow control and finally as a finishing touch, a built in Chorus with On/Off switch.

The JX-8P is a 6-voice, 12-DCO, programmable analog synthesizer with a touch-sensitive and pressure-sensitive 5-octave, 61-note (C-C) keyboard. It is a direct descendant of Roland's first non-knob-and-slider synth, the JX-3P. Each voice contains two DCOs, one VCF, and a single ADSR for the VCF and/or the VCA, which can be inverted. Since it has only a few sliders and knobs, the PG-800 programmer facilitates quick editing and access to all editing parameters (it is also used with the MKS-70 and the JX-10).

Akai S1000 stereo sampler + S1000PB
The S1000 was one of the most popular 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo samplers of it's time. It features 16-voices, up to 32MG of RAM, and 24-bit internal processing wherein samples can be processed through a set of analog-like (although digital) modifiers, including a digital filter (18dB/octave), an LFO, and two ADSR envelope generators (one for amplitude and one for the filter). The S1000 also offered up to 8 different loop points. Additional functions included Autolooping, Crossfade Looping, Loop in Release (cycles through the loop as the sounds decay), Loop Until Release (cycles through the loop until the note begins its decay), and Reverse. The operating system is stored on ROM. However, upgrades can be loaded from a disk. Time Stretch function was available on version 1.3 and higher.
An oldie but a goodie. Akai's great sampler of the late eighties! It actually still stacks up pretty well even today! A 16-bit, 22kHz to 44.1kHz sampler with 2MB to 32MB of RAM. Editing and programming the S-1000 is a very good precursor to the advanced S-3000 series. There are lots of advanced edit capabilities for looping, truncating, sample merging, time comp/exp, tuning and even analog-like parameters to control its filters and envelopes. Individual outputs for each of the 16 voices, stereo mix out, stereo input, MIDI, and trigger inputs round out this machine as a professional vintage-status sampler that still proves to be very useful even today! It is used by Moby, The Chemical Brothers, SkyLab, Scanner, Fluke, Nick Rhodes, Fatboy Slim, LTJ Bukem, Mr. Oizo, Crystal Method, Pet Shop Boys, Gary Numan, Future Sound of London, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mouse on Mars, and Apollo 440.
